A SINGLE CHANNEL PULSE HEIGHT DISCRIMINATOR USING TUNNEL DIODES (in German)

The discriminator was developed for pulse height analysis in nuclear radiation measuring techniques. Two seriesconnected tunnel diode thresholds define the channel. The signal current and a back-biasing current responsible for the channel height flow through both diodes, another backbiasing current that defines the channel-width flows through one diode only. By setting the biasing currents it is possible to vary channel height and width. The temperature coefficient of the thresholds is estimated at about 10/sup -5/ per degree centigrade. A pulse meeting the channel delivers an output signal when its falling slope crosses the lower threshold. A pulse transcending the channel triggers a tunnel diode memory that suppresses an output signal. Because of the memory the circuit is independent from the rise time of the input pulses.
