ELECTRON DIFFRACTION STUDY OF THE MOLECULAR STRUCTURES OF SULFUR TETRAFLUORIDE (SF$sub 4$) AND THIONYL TETRAFLUORIDE (SOF$sub 4$)

The molecular structures of SC/sub 4/ and SOC/sub 4/ in the gascous state were determined by election diffraction using secton microphotometer data. Both molecule were confirmed to have trigonal bipyramidal structures (C/sub 2v/ symmetry), with two nonequivalent sets of F-S bond distances. The bond lengths, in terms of the center of gravity parameter, r/sub g/, and the bond angles are given. The polar C-S-F angles are measured aiong an arc that bisects the equatorial FSF angle.
