COOL-DOWN REFRIGERATION REQUIREMENTS FOR 80'' BUBBLE CHAMBER

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4142912
BS>Calculations are made of the refrigeration capacity required to cool down the 80-inch bubble chamber from ambient temperature to liquid H/sub 2/ temperature. The maximum heat flux through the glass to limit glass stress to 1000 psi is found to be 588 watts. The cool-down period is estimated to be 70 hr from ambient to N/sub 2/ temperature and 6 hr from N/sub 2/ to H/sub 2/ temperature, taking surface gradients into account. The required refrigeration capacity is found to be 6500 watts from ambient to N/sub 2/ temperature and 3350 watts from N/sub 2/ to H/sub 2/ temperature. Consumptions of liquid N/sub 2/ and H/sub 2/ for cooling by latent heat are also calculated. (D.L.C.)
