Measurements were made on the concentrations of I/sup 131/ in air, leafy vegetables, milk, and human thyroid glands from September to December 1962. The concentration of I/sup 131/ in air showed a maximum of 2.4 mu mu C/m/sup 3/. The average for the whole period was 0.43 mu mu C/m/sup 3/. Spinach samples showed a maximum of 1.9 mu mu C/g wet tissue, the average being 0.45 mu mu C/ g. Liquid milk from Tokyo showed a maximum level of 200 mu mu C/l, the monthly averages being 94, 93, 86, and 49 mu mu C/l in September-December, respectively. Average daily intake of I/sup 131/ through ingestion of leafy vegetables, which were considered the maln channel of transmittance of this radionuclide to the human population of Japan, was estimated as 8-26, 13-39, 11-33, and 7-20 mu mu C in September-December, respectively. The level of I/sup 131/ in human thyroids from 205 persons who died during the period September 10-November 30 in Tokyo was 2.0, 1.1 and 1.8 mu mu C/g wet tissue on the average in September, October and November, respectively.
