DETECTION OF NEUTRON AND PHOTON INDUCED FISSION BY ZnS(Ag) MIXED WITH URANIUM AND THORIUM COMPOUNDS

Journal Article · · Nuclear Instr. & Methods
A description is given of a scintillator consisting of ZnS(Ag) mixed with uranium and thorium compounds. The absolute counting efficiency for fast neutron fission is 3.2 plus or minus 0.6x 10/sup -3/%. and 5.4 plus or minus 1.0x 10/sup -3/% for U and Th compound mixtures. The efficiency is within the experimental error imdependent of the neutron energy between 2 and 3.6 Mev. The scintillator is shown to be useful for photofission studies due to its very low sensitivity for gamma rays. (auth)
