THE CHANGES OF MICROSTRUCTURE OF URANIUM BY CYCLIC HEAT TREATMENT (in Russian)

Metallographic and x-ray diffraction methods were used in studies of the relative displacement and deformation of large-grain, cylindrically shaped uranium crystallites un- der cyclic treatment. The large grain (6 x 0.5 mm) structure was achieved by recrystallization of the polymorphous state: cyclic treatment was carried out at 100 to 600 deg C. A pronounced curvature in the deformation line was observed with a single heating up to 606 deg C, but this line almost straightened out upon cooling to room temperature. The displacement, calculated on the basis of data on crystal inter-orientation and thermal expansion anisotropy. exceeds by a factor of two the experimentally obtained residual displacement of 3 x 10/sup -5/ per cycle. It was found that a considerable portion of the plastic deformation was localized at the boundary. The "thermal ratchet" is complicated by the wedging of adjoining grains. X-ray diffraction revealed that crystallites separate into blocks and subgrains following cyclic thermal treatments. (R.V.J.)
