STRUCTURAL CHANGES DURING THE HEATING OF COLD-DRAWN STAINLESS STEEL (in Russian)

The beginning and the end of the recrystallization and other structural changes of the cold-drawn steel No. Kh18N9T (corresponding to the U. S. 321 type) were investigated in the temperature range from 600 to 1200 deg C. The original structure containing finely drawn grains underwent an abnormal grain growth after being kept at 600 to 750 deg C for 3 hours and exhibited increased corrodability. The increase of the grain dimensions was followed by recrystallization starting at 750 deg C; recrystallized grains with curved boundaries spread throughout the metal by 800 deg C. Upon further heating, the original equiaxial crystals were reconstituted but heated beyond 1050 deg C new grain growth was observed as the result of selective crystallization. X-ray diffraction studies yielded higher values for the beginning and the end of the recrystallization process than the metallographic tests. (TTT)
