Ionization efficiency and energy energy characteristics of an ionization chamber used for radioactive gases are discussed. Efficiency experiments were made with a chamber 114 mm in diameter and 150 mm in height with walls of stainless steel, using a radioactive point source or Ar/sup 41/. The efficiency, obtained by varying the position of the source and by using sources of different energies was found to be almost inversely proportional to maximum BETA energy. The efficiency obtained at 1.20 Mev and that obtained with Ar/sup 41/ are in agreement. As to the energy characteristics, the relation of ionization current vs concentration was investigated. In the range of 0.167 approximates 1.70 Mev, ionization current I was found to be proportional to concentration C in mu C/cc. In comparison with ionization chambers of other dimensions, optimum energy characteristics were evident. (auth)
