An approach to the theoretical ionization efficiency of the spherical ionization chamber is described. Experimental discussions are presented. The ionization efficiency of a spherical chamber, derived on the assumption of the exponential law (as for the absorption of BETA particles in the ionizing gas), can be graphically estimated if the energy of BETA particles, the density of the ionizing gas, and the dimension of the chamber are given, together with knowledge of the backscattering factor and the energy distribution of backscattered radiation. The efficiency greatly depends upon the BETA absorption coefficient and upon the backscattering effect that occurs at the surface of the wall. The experimental discussions on the theoretical ionization efficiency are carried out by using point P/sup 32/ and I/sup 131/ sources and Ar/ sup 41/ gaseous sources. (auth)
