BS>The design of a well-type spark detector is described; the apparatus has a geometry near 4 pi and is used to determine the extent of alpha - contamination of the external surfaces of Po- Be n surfaces. The chief working characteristics of the counter filled with air and with Ar are given. Recording efficiency for alpha -particles and n are 3 and l.l%, respectively, for filling with air, and 12 and 4 x 10/sup 3/% for an Ar atmosphere. The counter is suitable for recording alpha -particles on an intense BETA - and gamma - background. (Ref. Zh., Fiz. 1963)
