PHOTOPRODUCTION OF CHARGED MESONS FROM DEUTERIUM AND THE $pi$$sup -$/ $pi$$sup +$ RATIO

A 4-in. deuterium bubble chamber was used to observe the reactions gamma + d yields pi /sup -/ + 2p and gamma + d yields pi /sup +/ + 2n at pho ton energies from threshold to 194 Mev. In the first reaction sufficient final-state information was obtained to determine the kinematical parameters required to calculate the Coulomb effects. By correcting the observed ratio R/ sub d/ = i/sup +/)! to account for the final-state Coulomb interactions, values were obtained for the ratio R = STA sigma ( gamma n yields pi /sup -/)!/STA sigma ( gamma p yields pi /sup +/)!. These values are tabu lated for energies of 152 to 175 Mev. The second reaction, which is followed by pi /sup +/ yields mu /sup +/ + nu decay, was identified by the characteristic range and electron decay of the muon. Before Coulomb correction, the average ratio was R/ sub d/ = 1.38 plus or minus 0.12; after corrections the average ratio was R = 1.27 plus or minus 0.11. The photon energy distribution for the negative photopion events at 158 to 165 Mev is illustrated. (B.O.G.)
