PROCESS FOR THE SEPARATION OF THORIUM AND URANIUM SALTS
A process is proposed for separation of Th from U in organic solutions in which both metals are present as nitrates. To the organic solution is added an aqueous solution of an agent that selectively precipitates the Th as a crystalline compound insoluble in, but transferred to, the aqueous phase. Free oxalic and sulfuric acid solutions are preferred as precipitating agents, but watersoluble salts of the acids may be used. Preferred concentrations of sulfuric acid and water-soluble sulfates are between about 1.5 and 2.5 M. For oxalic acid and water-soluble oxalate solutions, a concentration of between about 0.8 and 1.2 M is preferred. Recovery of Th with cocentraction of less than 1% of U present in the starting solution is possible. The process may be carried out continuously or batch-wise. (A.G.W.)
