SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC EVIDENCE FOR COMPLEX FORMATION IN THE TRI-n-BUTYL PHOSPHATE-WATER-NITRIC ACID SYSTEM
Tri-(normal)-butyl phosphate solutions containing varying concentrations of nitric acid were investigated to determine the stoichiometry and stability of the complexes formed in the reaction between the two. Spectra data in the range 260 to 320 m mu showed that tri-n-butyl phosphate and associated nitric acid reacted to form a stable equimolar complex. Evidence is presented which indicates that additional stable complexes having different mole ratios were not formed. This work demonstrated the complex which is present in the tri-n-butyl phosphate phase, and enabled the interpretation of data that were obtained for the two-phase tri-n-butyl phosphate-water-nitric acid system. The significance of this complex can be found in its direct application to metal extraction processes, and an understanding of the fundamental chemistry underlying the: processes. (auth)
