REACTOR INSTRUMENTATION AND CONTROL PROGRESS REPORT NO. 80

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4129851
Testtng of beryllia and thoria dielectric specimens to 4000 deg F for use in capacitance temperature sensors is reported. Included in this effort is the use of a transistorized oscillator to increase the maximum operating temperature te 3780 deg F, continued refinement of the 3000 deg F probe and readout system, and the fabrication of a molybdenum-beryllia vacuum-sealed probe. The testing of fission counter components to 1500 deg F and the fabrication of d- c ionization chamber parts for testing to 1200 deg F are summarized. Testing of two gamma-compensated ionization chambers in an alternating current mode is discussed. The design and fabrication of a new ionization chamber suited to a-c operation are deecribed. Charged-fragment neutron detector testing in the presence of x rays, gamma rays, and thermal neutron flux is evaluated. (N.W.R.)
