METHOD OF EQUIPPING A NUCLEAR REACTOR FUEL ELEMENT WITH A THERMOCOUPLE

In the method described for equipping a nuclear fuel element with a thermocouple, a thermocouple junction and the adjacent part of its associated stainless-steel sheathed cable are covered with either Nb or Ta. A uranium fuel member is then fabricated about the junction and part of the covered cable so that the uncovered part of the cable extends beyond the fuel member. The fabricated fuel member is then enclosed in the fuel element sheath and a seal is provided where the cable passes through the sheath. (A.G.W.)
