FUEL ELEMENT FOR ATOMIC PILE

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4179035
A fuel element is manufactared by sintering or casting fissile material around the extremity of a stainless steel enveloped thermocouple cable which, with the exception of the hot junction, is protected against contact with the fissile material by means of a Nb or Ta sleeve. A protective can and end caps are applied, the passage of the cable through the end cap being sealed by means of a mechanical or molten seal. By leading the cable through the conical bottom adapter, it does not interfere with the handling and piling up of the fuel elements. A second thermocouple junction can be inserted in the can wall and its cable united with the other one.
