INFLUENCE OF X-RAY IRRADIATION ON THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM OF ALBINO RATS ON THE GLYCOGEN CONTENT IN THE LIVER CELLS

The effect of head irradiation of adult rats with 190-kv x rays at a rate of 25r/riin on the glycogen content of liver cells was studied. The 75 experimental animals received single head doses of 600or 1200 r, or two 600 r doses at a 24-hr interval. The animals were killed immediately or after 2 hr, 24 hr, 7 days, or 21 days, and liver thus obtained was studied by the histochemical method of Best and by the photometric anthrone method. The liver tissue, in the absence of a local action of ionizing radiation, presented metabolic and enzymatic changes that could be detected by histochemical and chemical methods. A decrease of the glycogen content, which was observed during the first hours after irradiation of the central nervous system, probably resulted from the loss of appetite and of associated digestive disturbances, superimposed on the complex general irradiation reaction. The observed later (at 12-24 hr) increase of glycogen may have been the result of the action of the compensatory system of pituitary gland and adrenals, reacting to the stimuli of fasting and irradiation. It is concluded that the considerable fall in liver glycogen after 600 and 1200 r may be due to a limited intake of food, and that the less pronounced fall and greater rise in the values in the later period can be ascribed to the stress acting to compensate the glycogen level.
