TWO NUCLEON STRIPPING AND THE $sup 16$0($sup 3$He, p$gamma$$)$$sup 18$F REACTION

Journal Article · · Nuclear Physics (Netherlands) Divided into Nucl. Phys. A and Nucl. Phys. B
The mechanism of the O/sup 16/(He/sup 3/,p gamma )F/sup 18/ reaction proceeding via the first excited state of F/sup 18/ at 0.934-Mev excitation was studied by measuring the angular correlation in the plane of the reaction of the de-excitation gamma rays in coincidence with the proton group leading to this state. Correlations were measured at a fixed proton angle of 36 deg with incident He/sup 3/ energies of 9.16 and 10.0 Mev and also at a proton angle of 71 deg with an incident beam energy of 10.0 Mev. With the proton counter on the peak of the stripping curve at 36 deg , an axis of symmetry was found about 26 deg from the direction of the recoiling F/sup 18/ nucleus. The correlations are analyzed and discussed and are presented as favoring the two nucleon stripping process, where the two nucleons are captured as a lump, as being the predominant reaction mechanism for the O/sup 16/(He/sup 3/,p)F/sup 18/ reaction at a bombarding energy of about 10 Mev.
