PROTONS FROM DEUTERON BOMBARDMENT OF Be$sup 7$

Journal Article · · Nuclear Phys.
Protons from the reaction Be/sup 7/(d,p)Be/sup 8/ leading to Be/sup 8/ excitations up to 11 Mev were examined with a Nal(Tl) scintillation spectrometer. No groups attributable to Be/sup 8/ were observed except those corresponding to the ground state (p/sub 0/) and first excited state (p/sub 1/), along with a continuum extending to over 11 Mev excitation. Resonances were found at bombarding energies of 0.900 plus or minus 0.025 (p/sub 0/ and p/sub 1/) and 1.475 plus or minus 0.010 Mev (p/sub 1/ only) with center-of-mass widths 120 plus or minus 40 and 71 plus or minus 8 kev, respectively, corresponding to states in B/sup 9/ at 17.19 and 17.63 Mev. The excitation energy and width of the first excited state of Be/sup 8/ are E/sub x/ = 2.90 plus or minus 0.06 and ?/sub cm/ = 1.53 plus or minus 0.04 Mev. The reduced width of this state and the alpha -- alpha interaction radius extracted from a single-level analysis were compared with those found in He ( alpha , alpha ) and B/sup 10/(d, alpha ) reactions.
