THE DETERMINATION OF THE EQUILIBRIUM PHASE DIAGRAM, ZIRCONIUM-NIOBIUM
Technical Report

OSTI ID:4113440
The zirconium--niobium system was systematically investigated to establish the equilibrium phase diagram from 0 to 100% of alloy addition. The phase equilibria were determined by metallographic techniques with the auxiliary aid of hardness determinations and incipientmelting techniques. A minimum in the liquidus-solidus boundaries occurred at 22 wt% niobium and 1740 deg C. Complete solid solubility existed above 970 deg C in the bodycentered cubic phase. A monotectoid reaction existed at 20 wt% niobium and 610 deg C. Solid solubilities at the monotectoid level were 0.6 and 85 wt % niobium, respectively. (auth)
