THE EQUILIBRIUM PHASE DIAGRAM, NIOBIUM-ALUMINUM. Final Report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4727163
The binary equilibrium phase diagram of niobiumaluminum alloys was studied by metallographic, x-ray diffraction, hardness, and thermal analysis techniques. Auxiliary equilibria data were obtained by hardness and incipient- melting techniques. Metallographic studies were conducted on both as-cast and annealed-and-quenched alloys. Three intermediate phases were established; Nb/sub 3/Al, Nb/sub 2/Al, and NbAl/sub 3/. The Nb/sub 3/Al and Nb/sub 2/Al phases both have ranges of solid solubility. The Nb/sub 3/Al and Nb/sub 2/Al intermediate phases are formed peritectically at 1960 450 deg C in a 10 un. Concent 85% C and 1870 450 deg C in a 10 un. Concent 85% C, respectively, whereas the NbAl/ sub 3/ phase forms congruently from the melt at 1605 450 deg C in a 10 un. Concent 85% C. Structural and lattice parameter data for the intermediate phases were determined by x-ray diffraction. The maximum solid solubility of Al in Nb is 23.0 450 deg C in a 0.5 at. % (8.0 wt %)Al at 1960 450 deg C in a 10 un. Concent 85% C. A eutectic reaction occurs at 57.8 450 deg C in a 0.5 at. % (28.5 wt %)Al and 1550 450 deg C in a 10 un. Concent 85% C between Nb/sub 2/Al and NbAl/sub 3/. The Al-rich end of the diagram has a peritectic reaction at 661.4 450 deg C in a 0.5 un. Concent 85% C within less than 1 wt% Nb. The maximum solid solubility of Nb in Al is less than 0.3 450 deg C in a 0.1 at. % (1.0 wt %)Nb. (auth)
