The constitution diagram was plotted of Nb--Al alloy on the basis of microstructure, thermal, and diffraction analyses. Three compounds, Nb/sub 3/Al, Nb/sub 2/Al, and NbAl/sub 3/, were found. The Nb/sub 3/Al and Nb/sub 2/Al form by peritectic reaction at 2120 plus or minus 10 deg and 1890 plus or minus 10 EC, while NbAl/sub 3/ crystallized from the melt at 1660 plus or minus 10 deg C. Aluminum solubility in niobium at 2120 deg C is plus or minus 6 wt.%, dropplng to 4.5% at room temperature. Aluminum increases the hardness and electroconductivity of niobium. With 8 to 45 wt.% Al, the hardness is 450 to 500 kg/mm2, and the electroconductlvity is 220 to 300 mu ohm cm. Alloys with solid solution of niobiam have a higher corrosion resistance in water vapor at 400 deg C and 300 atm than niobium. The NbAl/sub 3/ compound is a superconductor. (R.V.J.)
