THE DETERMINATION OF THE EQUILIBRIUM PHASE DIAGRAM, ZIRCONIUM-NIOBIUM. Interim Report No. 1

A systematic determination of the complete equilibrium phase diagram of the blnary system, Zr--Nb, was conducted. The phase relationships were determined by metallographic techniques with the auxiliary aid of hardness determination and incipient-melting techniques. A minimum in the liquidus- solidus boundaries occurs at 22 wt.% Nb and 1740 deg C. Complete solid solubility exists above 970 deg C in the body-centered cubic phase. A monotectoid reaction exists at 20 wt.% Nb and 610 deg C. Solid solubilities at the monotectoid level are 0.6 and 85 wt.% Nb, respectively. (auth)
