After a review of the biologicai effects of ionizing radiations and the protective action of some substances, the results obtained by administering an aqueous spleen extract to rats and mice subjected to irradiation are reported. When the aqueous spleen extract was administered intravenously to rats irradiated with a single 680 r dose, a good protective action was noted (reduction in mortality rate, regaining of body weight, and slight quantitative alterations in the blood leucocyte counts). In mice irradiated with 250 r doses, three times weekly, the intraperitoneal administration of aqueous spleen extract resulted in return to normal values of the phagocitic activity of the reticulo-endothelial system, The spleen extract was active oniy in aqueous solution, and it was effective whether it was administered immediately before or after the irradiation; no protective effect was obtained on giving the extract 12, 24, or 60 hr after irradiation. The lipid spleen extract gave negative results. (auth)
