The separation of cerium-group elements was carried out by the fractional crystallization of double magnesium nitrate. The composition of the rare earth salt used in this experiment was as follows: La/sub 2/O/sub 3/, 23.4%; CeO/sub 2/, 1.2%; Pr/sub 6/O/sub 11/, 13.1%; Nd/sub 2/O/sub 3/, 57.5%; Sm/sub 2/O/ sub 3/, 3.1%; an d SIGMA STAY/sub 2/O/sub 3/!, 1.7%. During the fractional crystallization the degrees of separation of cerium group elements were known from the behaviors of Pr and Nd, which were analyzed by spectrophotometry. When the fractional crystallizations were carried out 500 times with about 60 fractions, the pure oxides of La and Nd were obtained, and the concentrated oxides of Pr and Sm were separated. The pure oxides obtained were 1.0 kg of La/ sub 2/O/sub 3/ and 1.5 kg of Nd/sub 2/O/sub 3/. (auth)
