PHASE EQUILIBRIUM STUDIES IN THE SYSTEM THO$sub 2$-B$sub 2$$O$$sub 3$

Journal Article · · Journal of the American Ceramic Society (U.S.)

The system ThO/sub 2/--B/sub 2/O/sub 3/ was characterized by one stable intermediate phase, thorium borate (ThB/sub 2/O/sub 5/), and two eutectics. One eutectic occurred between ThB/sub 2/O/sub 5/ and B/sub 2/O/sub 3/ at about 98 mole% B/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and somewhat less than 325 deg C where thorium borate and boric oxide coexist with liquid. The other eutectic was between ThB/sub 2/O/sub 5/ and ThO/sub 2/ at about 18 to 20% B/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and slightly less than 1483 deg C. However, the eutectic mixture contained very little (less than 2%) ThO/sub 2/ and melted completely at a very low temperature. (P.C.H.)
