IN VITRO I$sup 131$ UPTAKE BY SALIVARY GLANDS, STOMACH AND PLACENTA

Slices of various tissues of the rat were incubated at 37 ts C for 6 hr in 2 ml of medium containing 0.3 - c carrierfree I/sup 131/. I/sup 131/ concentration significantly above that o f the medium, and of boiled tissues, was observed in salivary glands and stomach, but not in liver or placenta. I/sup 131/ uptake by parotid was significantly higher than that of submaxillary and sublingual tissues. Uptake by tissues from the cardiac portion of the stomach was significantly greater than in those from the pyloric portion. Concentration of I/sup 131/ by salivary glands and stomach slices was reduced by the addition of thiouracil (0.02 mg/ml), KSCN (0.1 mg/ml), or NaCN (0.1 mg/ml), but it was not affected by the addition of TSH (100 - g/ml) to the medium. None of these additives iufluenced the small I/sup 131/ uptake found in liver and placenta. I/sup 131/ uptake by salivary glands and stomach of the mouse, deg, and cow was similar to that in the rat, except that there was less difference between the parotid and submaxillary glands. (auth)
