Journal Article · · Sb. Ved. Praci Lekar. Fak. Karlovy Univ. Hradci Kralove

Rats were irradiated by a single whole-body dose of 500 r, and changes of the levels and concentrations of sodium, potassium, and chloride in serum, heart and skeletal muscle and in the renal cortex were studied. The investigations were performed at irtervals of 12 and 24 hr, 3, 6, 10, and 15 days following irradiation. In the serum the Na level was decreased on the 3rd day and increased on the 10th day after irradiation. In heart muscle a decrease of K concentration on the 3rd day and an increase of Na concentration on the 10th day were found. In the cortex of the kidney a decrease of Na concentration in 24 hr and on the 6th day, and an increase on the 15th day took place. At 24 hr a decrease of K concentration, and an increase of Cl concentration on the 10th day, were observed. In skeletal muscle a decrease of Na concentration at 24 hr and an increase on the 15th day were found. The K concentrrtion was decreased in 12 hr and on the 15th day. The concentration of Cl was increased on the 10th day. All these changes were statistically significant. In rabbits after whole-body irradiation with a dose of 1000 r the serum levels of K and the concentration of K in heart muscle on the 3rd and 6th days following irradiation were unchanged. (BBB)
