CERAMIC FUEL FOR NUCLEAR REACTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4105271
A method of making a ceramic fuel element using a binder of gelatiaous fissionable material is patented. UO/sub 2/ powder is ball milled with approximates 2% by weight of a gelatinous Pu polymer, which may be either the quadrivalenthydroxide or hydrated oxide, The mixture is pressed to form a green compact and then sintered to convert the quadrivalent Pu to PuO/sub 2/. The improved sintering characteristics of the green compacts permit the use of stoichiometric UO/sub 2/, which resists radiation damage better than the nonstoichiometric oxide. (M.P.G.)
