Sign of the E4 moment in $sup 236$U by multiple Coulomb excitation with $sup 40$Ar ions

Multiple Coulomb excitation with $sup 40$Ar projectiles has been used to excite the ground state rotational band of $sup 236$U through the 12$sup +$ state. A comparison of the experimental and theoretical excitation probabilities confirms a positive value for the E4 moment, removing the sign ambiguity inherent in the determination of this moment by $alpha$-particle Coulomb excitation.
