RADIATION PROTECTIVE EFFECT AND PHARMACOLOGICALLY CHANGED ACTIVITY OF THE RETICULO-ENDOTHELIAL SYSTEM

Journal Article · · Nature

Olive oil, ti iolein, 2-oleodistearin, and tricaprin stimulated the phagocytic activity of reticulo-endothetial cells 24 hr after injection and ethyl palmitate, ethyl stearate, ethyl oleate, and cholesterol oleate depressed it at this time. All these lipids exerted a protective effect against 610 r whole-body x radiation in mice. The concept of enhanced activity of the reticulo- endothelial system as a factor in the survival of irradiated mice is discussed. (C.H.)
