TAKING STRONG COUPLING INTO ACCOUNT IN ELECTRON COLLISIONS WITH THE HYDROGEN ATOM

The strong coupling between the 1s, 2s, and 2p levels were taken into account with exchange being neglected. Partial cross sections were tabulated for the various levels with the total moment being kept in mind. The set of four differential equations was solved directly on a computer. The values are in good agreement with the results of Burke presented in the Proc. Phys. Soc., 80, 1962. Coupling between Other levels such as between the 1s-2s level, and espccially between the 1s-2p level, has a substantial effect on the elastic scattering cross section sigma (1s-1s). This effect is removed on taking exchange into account. The 2s-2p coupling has almost no effect on the calculation of n(1s-1s). It is shown that the second Born approximation in which strong coupling is taken into account gives a better estimate of the contribution of the higher partial wives (for example, L> 5) to the total cross section. The total cross sections for the 1s-2s and 1s-2p transitions are plotted for electron energies of 10 to 50 ev. (TTT)
