COLLISIONS OF SLOW ELECTRONS WITH ATOMS (in Russian)

The articles presented in the collect on are reviewed. Excitation of the sodium atom by slow electrons was calculated with the use of integral equations. Exchange and strong coupling were taken into account for one energy value of the incident electron. The elastic scattering of slow electrons by lithium was also calculated with exchange being taken into account. The effective scattering cross sections for electrons having energies up to 50 ev by Li, Na, K, and Cs were estimated by taking into account strong coupling according to Seaton's method. The second Born approximation, which is much simpler than the method of integral equations, was used to calculate the effective elastic scattering cross section of electrons on hydrogen atoms. The agreement between theory and experiment is good for elastic scattering, but is lacking in the case of excitation and ionization. Coupling between the 1s-2s and 1s-2p levels in hydrogen was taken into account in calculating the elastic scattering of electrons and excitation of the 2s and 2p levels. Exchange and strong coupling between levels were calculated by solving the equations directly on a computer. The total orbital moment was considered. Coupling between the 1s, 2s, and 2p levels were taken into account to calculate the excitation cross section of the 2s and 2p levels. The distortion of the electron wave function by the coulombic ion field was taken into account in calculating resonance widths, and shifts. The Born approximation was used to calculate the ionization cross section of the hydrogen atom. (56 references) (TTT)
