ELECTRONIC AND NUCLEAR PROPERTIES OF SOME RADIOACTIVE RARE-EARTH ELEMENTS (thesis)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4099061
Ground-state nuclear spins of 13 radioactive rare earths (lanthanides) were measured by the atomic-beam magneticresonance method. Ground levels and corresponding g values were determined, and ground-state electroric configurations were inferred for Pm, Dy, Ho, and Er. In addition, electronic properties were verified for Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, and Tl. The following isotopes were used in these investigations for which the half lives, nuclear ground-state spins, and J and g/sub j/ values are stated: Pr/sup 142/, Nd/sup 147/, Pm/sup 147/ , /sup 60/, Dy/sup 165/, Dy/sup 166/, Ho/sup 166/, Er/sup 16/ s/sup 9/, Er/sup 171/ and Tm/sup 171/. The magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments of the two odd-odd nuclei Pr/sup 142/ and Tm/sup 170/ are ca lculated from measurements of the hyperfine-structure separations. (T.R.H.)
