METHOD OF SINTERING METALLIC OXIDES

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4098362

High-density UO/sub 2/ bodies are obtained by mixing UO/sub 2/ powder with 1 to 3 wt.% CaH/sub 2/, compacting the mixture. slowly heating the compact under vacuum to a temperature above 675 ts C, and finally sintering at 1700 to 1900 ts C. Above 675 ts C. CaH/sub 2/ is decomposed into calcium and hydrogen. The calcium partly reduces the UO/sub 2/ at sintering temperature to uranium. The voids thereby formed improve the volumetric diffusion, giving rise to a higher density. (NPO)
