CALCULATING THE IONIZATION CROSS-SECTION OF THE HYDROGEN ATOM WITH THE USE OF PLANE WAVE APPROXIMATIONS (in Russian)

In calculating the effective ionization cross section with the use of a Born approximation, the incident and scattered electrons are described by a plane wave, and the electroNonen knocked out of the atom is described by a coulombic wave function for a continuous spectrum. In order to study the effect of the election wave function on the ionization cross section, plane wave functions were used in describing both electrons after the ionization. The integrals were solved on a digital computer. The total ionization cross-section was determined with exchange being taken into account. The calculated value of the cross section exceeded the experimental value of a factor of two, even though nonorthogonality of the wave function and exchange were taken into account. The values differ by a factor of three, if nonorthogonality of the wave function is not taken into account. These results show that it is very important to select the electron wave function correctly. (TTT)
