For measuring specific activities, detectors must be gaged in the measuring unit of the specific activity. A gaging substance for this purpose is K/sup 40/, which is mainly used as potassium chloride (KCl). It is cheap, easily available, has a very long half life, its beta and gamma energies are in the medium range, and it is not subject to the stipulations of the first radiation protection regulation, being a naturally radioactive isotope. As a basis for subsequent investigations, the pulse rate for a gaging preparation made of a KCl solution and for a preparation made of KCl salt was calculated and compared to measurement results. There was almost complete agreement between calculation and measurement in the result; a relatively small deviation in the case of the salt is explained. The gaging constants for beta radiation was derived for the following technical measurement configurations: detector with lid foil, missing saturation thickness of the measuring preparation; detector without foil, missing saturation thickness of the measuring preparation; detector with lid foil, measuring preparation is available in saturation thickness; and detector without lid foil, measuring preparation is available in saturation thickness. It was always assumed that the gaging preparations are available in saturation thickness. Both definitions of specific activity, the definition referring to volume and the one referring to weight, were taken into consideration. Diagrams and examples are included. The gaging constants for gaging with the gamma radiation of K/sup 40/ were not explicitly calculated. Reference was made to previous papers in which the basis for the energy conversions, which are necessary in this case, can be found. The statistical error in measurement of specific activities is discussed. (auth)
