4$pi$-SCINTILLATION COUNTER FOR SMALL BETA ACTIVITY MEASUREMENTS (in Polish)

Journal Article · · Nukleonika (Poland)
OSTI ID:4010865

The beta detector utilizes two photomultiplier tubes, each of which has a plastic scintillator coupled to it with a light pipe. The scintillators are separated by% thin airgap for 4 pi geometry. The detectors are placed in a quickopening shield, and their outputs are added and sent to an amplifier, discriminator, and counter. The characteristics of the detector are given as a function of voltage across the photomultiplier bleeder string, the gain of the amplifier, and the thickness of the scintillator pair. The thin scintillators were found to be extremely insensitive to gamma radiation in measuring /sup 40/K activity, as determined by blocking out the beta activity with aluminum foils. The background of the detector arrangement is low and could be further improved by using thinner scintillators and an anticoincidence circuit. (TTT)
