The frequencies of the resonances observed in the previous dipole resonance studies were predicted in closer agreement with experimental data. Theory for plasma production in which ionization is produced by an electron beam either partially or completely filling the tube section was also developed. Preliminary experimental results are consistent with the beam-plasma interaction theory. Additionally, ion waves excited on the positive column of a lowpressure Hg discharge by a magnetic field coil were studied. On the anode side of the coil, heavily damped waves were observed to propagate at frequencies of 2 to 40 kc/sec. The wavelengths were long (40 to 80 cm), and the phase velocities were higher than the ionic sound speed. No propagation was observed on the cathode side of the coil. A simple theory taking account of damping apparently can give an approximate explanation of the experimental results. Refined apparatus for studying the double sheath that forms at a discharge tube constriction was constructed. (D.C.W.)
