Dry seeds of spring wheat were gamma irradiated (Co/sup 60/) with 4-, 8- , and 16-kr doses and planted; the seeds of the descendants were also planted, some after irradiation with 12- or 16-kr doses. Viability of the first- generation seeds was not significantly decreased by 4 kr, was decreased noticeably with 8 kr, and both viability and plant development were sharply decreased with 16 kr. When the seeds of this generation were planted, survival and plant height were lower for the irradiated than for the controls, especially when the seeds came from 16-kr irradiated parents. However, descendants of plants receiving 4- and 8kr doses in the first generation and 12- and 16-kr doses in the second generation were the same height, with some protective effect of the first irradiation being noted. A smaller percentage of the seeds receiving 4 and 8 kr showed chromosome aberration, also indicative of protective effect. The results may be explained by an increase in exchange of substances under the effect of the irradiation, these being very basic in nature and resulting in greater radiation stability of the descendants. Selection, resulting in survival of the most radioresistant, may also be very important. Preliminary irradiation as a means of increasing resistance of plants and animals to subsequent irradiation cannot be a direct method of radiation protection. (TTT)
