MICE LIVER CATALASE ACTIVITY AFTER X-IRRADIATION
The results of studies on the effects of radiation on catalase activity in the livers of mice are reported and discussed. After a dose of 600 r, the catalase activity decreased statistically significantly on the 6th day and later in about 50% of the mice. In animals with a more expressed drop of liver catalase activity later more significant loss of body weight, decrease of erythrocytes count, and fatty degeneration of the liver were observed. In accordance with previous data, the liver catalase activity decreased after starving, in the course of anemia, hypoxia, after administration of amino acids, after castration, adrenalectomia, and riboflavin and vitamin A free diet. It was concluded that liver catalase activity could be a good diagnostic and prognostic indicator of radiation damage. (P.C.H.)
