MOUSE LIVER CATALASE ACTIVITY AFTER X IRRADIATION
Liver catalase activity after a dose of 600 r (LD/sub 50/30/) decreased in about 50% of mice on the 6th day and later after irradiation. In the animals with the more marked drop of liver catalase activity, later more marked loss of body weight, decrease of erythrocyte court, and fatty degeneration of the liver were observed. The observed increase of the catalase activity in spleen and the decrease in blood and liver in the same animals show that the enzyme is not affected chemically but that the content of catalase based on tissue weight diminishes due to impaired synthesis. In the spleen the disintegration of lymphatic and myeloid tissue relatively poor in catalase content occurs so that the spleen catalase activity is mostly in the erythrocytes. In liver the protein content after irradiation diminishes, and the synthesis of new cntalase is delayed; therefore, its quantity related to unit weight decreases. Activity of liver catalase was reduced proportionally with the loss of liver nitrogen. Catalase activity of liver extract irradiated in vitro was not affected even after a dose of 20,000 r and the activity of pure catalase in water not even after a dose of 100,000 r. The liver catalase level of healthy organisras shows little variability; in 50 cortrol mice the standard error of the mean was only plus or minus 1%, with maximal deviations of -10, and +6%. Hence, liver catalase activity is a good diagnostic and prognostic indicator of radiation damage. (BBB)
