Welding studies conducted concurrentiy with an alloy scale-up effort in which several promising Nb alloy systems were eva1uated are described. Emphasis on alloy evaluation was placed on weldability as well as strength. In particular, alloy ductility as determined by bend testing in both the base metal and weld metal was stressed. Nb is strengthened significantiy by alloying with the elements Mo, W, V, and/ or Zr. The alloying systems investigated included Nb- -V, Nb-- Mo-V, Nb-- Mo-- V-- Zr, and Nb--W-- V-- Zr. Both high and low interstitial alloys were investigated. Good aswelded ductility was obtained only in those having low total interstitial levels (<300 ppm total C, O, and N). The Nb--5Mo--5V-- 1Zr alloy proved to be most promising providing high tensile strength (38000 pse at 2200 deg F) with a minimum compromise of weldability and weld ductility. (P.C.H.)
