The development of a welding technique for pure Nb and the design and development of weldable Nb alloys are described. To avoid changes in properties, welding was done in a closed chamber using an atmosphere of He, since N can be removed more easiiy from He than from Ar. The properties of welds made under pure He atmospheres were compared with those of welds made under atmospheres contaminated with N/sub 2/ and O/sub 2/. Alloys were designed using weldability parameters based on the physicai, mechanical, and the metallurgical properties of Nb and its possibie alloying elements. The design parameters were used to screen out alloy additions that wouid produce hot cracking, porosity, loss of ductility at ambient temperature, and other weiding defects. Alloys containing Ti, Mo, W, V, Hf, Zr, and U were selected as being weldable, and these alloys, with the exception of the Nb--U alloy, were made, weided, and tested. The selected alloys were found to be weldable. The hardness and microstructures of the alloys were studied and the data are included. A weld in an alloy of Nb and W was tested in tension at 1000 and 1093 deg C (1832 and 2000 deg F) and found to have strengths comparable to the base material. (P.C.H.)
