EFFECT OF SOME DRUGS ON THE EFFECTIVE HALF-LIFE OF THYROIDAL I$sup 13$$sup 1$ (in Japanese)

The influence of drugs on the retention of I/sup 131/ by the thyroid was tested in human subjects (12 euthyroid cases and 16 cases of hyperthryoidism). After administration of desiccated thyroid, the effective half life (EHL) of thyroidal I/sup 131/ was prolonged in the euthyroid subjects but unaffected in the hyperthyroid cases, except in one case after remission of the disease by I/ sup 131/ treatment, in whom administration of desiccated thyroid prolonged the EHL. After administration of KI, the EHL was prolonged in the euthyroid subjects and in the hyperthyroid cases given tracer doses of I/sup 131/ but not in the hyperthyroid cases retreated with therapeutic doses of I/sup 131/. After administration of reserpine, the EHL was prolonged in all subjects, but inhibition of thyroidal I/sup 131/ uptake was observed in none of them. These findings indicate that the release of hormone from the thyroid gland is under control of the hypothalamus. In hyperthyroidism it was confirmed that the control mechanism for regulating the hormone concentration in blood was disturbed. Reserpine raised the uptake of I/sup 131/ by the thyroid gland, and this effect, in combination with its effect in alleviating hyperfunction of the thyroid, suggests that reserpine could be used for treatment of hyperthyroidism.
