THE RELAXATION OF THE INITIAL SUSCEPTIBILITY AND ITS RECOVERY IN NICKEL, INVESTIGATED USING POLYCRYSTALLINE SPECIMENS AFTER DEFORMATION, QUENCHING AND NEUTRON IRRADIATION (in German)

The recovery of nickel after plastic deformation, neutron irradiation, and quenching was investigated by measuring the initial susceptibility and, on quenched samples, the coercive force. The following stages of recovery were observed: a stage near 0 deg C in deformed nickel in accordance with previous investigations, probably due to the separation of vacancy pairs from impurity atoms with an activation energy of 0.82 ev; a stage (III) near 100 deg C in deformed and in irradiated nickel, in accordance with previous investigations, probably due to the innihilation of interstitial atoms with an activation energy of (1.02 plus or minus 0.03) ev; stage IV in deformed nickel, the annihilation of vacancies with an activation energy of (1.6 plus or minus 0.1) ev; between these stages, in deformed and irradiated nickel, some more or less continuous recovery, probably due to the annihilation of vacancies coupled to solute atoms; a stage near 100 deg C, in quenched nickel, possibly explained by the separation of vacancy pairs from either vacancy clusters or from impurity atoms with an activation energy of (1.26 plus or minus 0.03) ev; and at 180 plus or minus 30 deg C in irradiated nickel, annihilation of some panticular lattice defect, which gives rise to strongly temperature dependent relaxation near 15 deg C. Possibly this defect is an interstitial pair of an impurity atom and a nickel atom. Its activation energy is (0.82 plus or minus 0.08) ev. (auth)
