AN APPARENT DIFFERENCE IN THE RENAL CLEARANCE OF CALCIUM-45 AND CALCIUM-40 IN RATS

In investigating the comparative excretion of Ca/sup 45/ and Sr/sup 89/ in rats, evidence of unexpected variability in the renal clearance of Ca/sup 45/ and Ca/sup 40/ was found. Weanling female Sprague-Dawley rats (I) were injected intraperitoneally with 1.0 ml of a solution containing carrier-free Sr/sup 89/, Ca/sup 45/ and 0.05 mg of calcium. Urine samples were collected at 30 and 60 min following injection and analyzed for Sr/sup 89/, Ca/sup 45/, and total calcium. One hour after injection. a blood sample was taken and analyzed for the Sr/sup 89/ and Ca/sup 45/ concentration in the plasma. A comparable group of rats (II) were denied food for 12 hr and the tests were repeated. The results of the tests on the two groups of six and eight rats, respectively, are tabulated. (B.O.G.)
