THE REFINING OF METALLIC LITHIUM (in Russian)
Metallic lithium prepared by either electrolytic or metallothermic process usually contains about 1% impurities. An attempt was made to purify the metal by different methods. Chemical methods were found to be laborious and required relatively pure starting materials. If the pressure is not greatly reduced, ordinary distillation does not appear to be much better; as the structure of the liquid metal systems are not too well known the optimum conditions cannot be easily calculated. Fractionate distillation at a residual pressure of 5 to 6 - 10/sup -4/ mm Hg at 300 to 400 deg C yielded a product with a sodium and potassium content of less than 0.01%; however, this method did not eliminate the magnesium impurity. Very good results were obtained by repeated operation in a refining column: a starting material containing 98.6% lithium yielded a product with a purity of more than 99.99%. The low-boiling components such as potassium, sodium, and magnesium were held at the dephlegmator, while the nonmetallic impurities remained in the residue. (TTT)
