The authors discuss stainless steels as basic structural materials for use in contact with sodium and sodium-potassium alloys in nuclear reactors. They are regarded as the most promising for use in contract with liquid lithium in projected thermonuclear reactors. The authors determine the equilibrium solubility of nickel from various chromium and chromium nickel steels in lithium containing not more than 1 . 10/sup -3/% of nonmetallic impurities (mainly sodium and potassium). The solubility was determined by absorption x-ray spectral analysis. Some of the steels involved in the experiments are 08Kh18N10T, 08Kh20N14S2 and KhN28VMAB.
