FEED MATERIALS PRODUCTION CENTER REFINERY--KEROSENE-TBP PROCESS. (Engineering Materials)
The Feed Materials Production Center Refinery is used to process uranium ore concentrates to highly purified uranium trioxide (UO/sub 3/). This is accomplished by: digestion of the ore concentrates in nltric acid; extraction of the uranium from the resulting uranyl nitrate slurry with tri-butyl phosphate in pulsed, perforated-plate extraction columns; and denltration to UO/sub 3/ by calcination of the aqueous uranyl nitrate. Auxiliary facilities include a nitric acid recovery system for absorbing nltric oxide vapors, an organic solvent treating system that permits the recycling of the tributyl phosphate solvent, and a sump system for the precipitation and recovery of uranium values in waste liquor streams.
